I went to Ace and had a nice gentleman almost make me a working spare key.
The silver one is the master. I'll be taking my last blank to Walmart I guess

Duplicating a key seems easy and most modern machines take out the guess work involved but if an older machine is being used there are a lot of things to be looking out for and being off by just a small amount throws everything out of wack.

Just saw a self contained key copying vending machine at Home Depot. Just stick your key into the slot and a duplicate magically comes out. We’re in the future now.

Those often make the keys with edges that don’t fit well, good key shops end up doing some wire brush and filing to get a smooth fit. I had one from a machine that wouldn’t turn at all, I had to do what a good place would do myself.

Yeah they suck and you end up filing and wire brushing them yourself. I just go to a good place.

Not surprised I guess. Although you’d think any problems like that would kill their business model. And it wouldn’t be too hard
to include a wire brush final step in the machine.

Some do have a brush station, well the one we had in the production shop I worked in sometimes for shows had it to finish a key. But you usually have the lock in your hand for that and can test it. If it’s your car you have to keep checking.
